A repeated login prompt was the most annoying proxy issue I had in Firefox because the username and password looked correct. I re-entered them several times before realizing the problem might be an old saved credential or the server itself. What usually causes these authentication loops, and what is the fastest way to tell whether Firefox or the proxy account is responsible?
Authentication errors often look similar even when the causes are different. Wrong credentials, expired access, an incorrect port, or a server-side problem can all trigger repeated prompts. Testing another server with the same Firefox profile is a useful way to narrow it down. If the second connection works normally, the original proxy or account is a more likely problem than the browser.
My worst authentication loop happened after I changed the password on the proxy account but Firefox still had the old credentials saved. The browser kept asking for login details on new tabs, even though I was entering the new password manually. I checked the authentication notes under the firefox proxies setup, cleared the saved login, and restarted the browser before entering the current credentials again. That fixed it immediately. On another occasion, the server itself was rejecting the account intermittently, so testing a second endpoint helped isolate the cause. Now I check saved credentials, host, port, and server availability before touching unrelated browser settings. Most login problems I have seen came from one of those areas.
