Public Wi-Fi Safety

I used to be pretty relaxed about café Wi-Fi until my email showed a login attempt from a location I’d never been to. Nothing serious happened, but it made me rethink things. Now I’m wondering what people actually do to stay safer when using public networks, especially while traveling or working from a laptop outside the house?
